Lirong's Camp Reflection

Anderson Training Camp 2007

This year’s training camp, is my third year going to Anderson Clover Guides Annual Training Camp at Camp Christine. However, this is the first time that it rained most of the time for the first 2 days. Hai...

Actually, there were quite a few activities we did not carry out, like First Aid Game, wide game and sentry duty. Also, we did very little PT. What I feel is, there was no sense of urgency despite the many harsh reminders. Hello~ campers, it’s a TRAINING camp, not just a camp. How many chances do you have in your life to go for a training camp that trains you physically as well as psychologically? So Sec3s, please take note of what you can do to inject that sense of urgency into the campers next year and Sec2s, please take initiative and be quick in whatever you do in next year’s training camp. But quick doesn’t mean lousy work. You must learn to be quick and yet produce quality results, not only during camp, but also during any guide meetings and activities.

After coming together with the Sec4s to plan this camp, I finally understood and realize how difficult it is for the seniors from the previous batches. It really is not easy to plan a camp for 3D2N for around 50 people. Imagine the activities we had to plan, both for dry and wet weather (oh yes, Sec3s, remember to plan sufficient activities for wet weather, important*), and the logistics for food and equipments, etc. The Sec4s really put in a lot of time, effort and we sacrificed our sleep to do the proposal or edit it. So I hope you trainees would appreciate what we did.

It might be too late to be saying this now but PLs, I think you could have given more instructions and allocated tasks rather than keep everything to yourself to do. Your role is to ensure that all your patrol members have something to do and you should be ensuring that everything is going on smoothly in your patrol. PSs, you should assist your PL and take over their duties whenever they are not around or not free. The whole patrol should work together. Other than co-operating within yourselves, everyone could have helped one another, no matter if she’s from other patrol. You may think:” I’ve finished my patrol duty and I’m tired. Why should I help other patrol?” But if the other patrols can finish what they are suppose to, they would have! When one patrol cannot finish their work, the whole camps would be punished. One for all, all for one. You should be looking out for and helping your fellow sister in guides all the time.

Nevertheless, I hope everyone present at camp would have enjoyed themselves. May this memory stay with you forever. Of course, this camp would not have been possible without the help from your seniors, Hui Xin, Hui Ying, Zhi Yan, Wei Xin, Wei Ching and Cai Ping. Thanks for taking off your precious time to join us and guide us along the way. Not forgetting Mrs Ong who stayed with us for the whole camp to ensure our safety. She had a hard time going through our proposal over and over again. Thank you Mrs Ong! Also, thank you Mdm Lidia and Mrs Chua! Although you couldn’t join us, your comments on our proposal and encouragements helped a lot. And thank you everyone!

Remember: It is not whether it’s fun or not, it is whether you WANT to THINK it’s fun or not. And you jolly well try to enjoy it in any way.

Keep the passion going, Anderson Clover Guides!

Yours in guiding
Li Rong
